Game Story
It's the same setting and familiar scenes, but now they are transferred to the Mafia 3 engine. A lot was expected from the third part, the first and second Mafias were great, but the third one lacked much to even be considered a good game, and it failed. The only advantage of this game was the fairly decent graphics and the new Illusion Engine. It was not very well optimized in Mafia 3, but hopefully, this will be fixed by the release of the new game.
Compare the quality of the cutscene in the old version of the game and the new one.
Gameplay
As before, you will play as Thomas Angelo. Essentially, you have the same tools as in GTA – an open world, plenty of weapons and cars, what more does a gamer need for entertainment? The setting is the USA, the fictional city of Lost Heaven in the 1930s, mob wars, family matters, everything you'd expect from a great plot.
A major issue with the city in the original game was its emptiness and lifelessness, the lack of side quests, interactive items, points of interest, and so on. The developers have made it clear that they are going to work hard on this, and at least players are promised a lively city.
The original storyline will not be changed; it has only been expanded with additional quests. So, it will be interesting to play even for those who have already completed Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.
Developers tweeted that instead of adult magazines, players will have to find cigarette pack cards, and in the screenshot – the main character, Tommy Angelo.
One of the most memorable moments from the first Mafia is the cutscene from the video below.
Graphics
The cinematic trailers make it clear that the graphics have been enhanced. The scenes are vibrant, the reworked models shine with new polygons, and HD textures are a treat for the eyes with their sharpness. The only concern is optimization, although based on the preliminary system requirements, it seems everything is fine, and even on older hardware from 5-6 years ago, the game will run on high settings.
System Requirements
Mafia: Definitive Edition's system requirements won't scare anyone – even the recommended graphics card is a GTX 1060 without specifying the amount of memory, and it comes in 3 and 6 GB versions. Even the top-end card is starting to age, with the RTX 2060 and RTX 2060 SUPER now replacing it.
It’s possible that the system requirements will be adjusted before release, so this information is approximate.
Minimum | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 7/8/8.1/10 |
Processor | Intel Core i5-2500K |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660 |
RAM | 6 GB |
Disk Space | 50 GB |
The minimum requirements for Mafia: Definitive Edition are hardware nearly 10 years old. This is likely a setup for HD resolution with minimum settings and an FPS slightly above 30. Many gamers would say that such a refresh rate is unplayable even for the minimum settings.
Recommended | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 7/8/8.1/10 |
Processor | Intel Core i7-3770 |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780, GTX 1060 |
RAM | 8 GB |
Disk Space | 50 GB |
This setup for Mafia: Definitive Edition was chosen by the developers, and they certainly didn't skimp. The powerful i7-3770 processor, even by today's standards, is a solid choice for gaming. Its older sibling, the i7-3770K, is more popular as its lack of power is compensated by overclocking, giving a good boost to performance.
Recommended requirements usually indicate the hardware needed for maximum graphics settings at FullHD resolution, aiming for 60 FPS. If the GTX 1060 handles this, then the game is very well optimized.
Maximum | |
---|---|
Operating System | 7/8/8.1/10 |
Processor | Intel Core i5-10600K |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER |
RAM | 16 GB |
Disk Space | 50 GB on SSD |
As usual, we have compiled our list of requirements, which is closer to the real needs of gamers. Computers for Mafia: Definitive Edition should handle the game at 2K with 90+ FPS, which is what we call "comfortable gameplay." The time for modest FullHD is over, even entry-level cards can now handle 2K graphics, so it's time to take advantage of that. 90+ FPS for a special gaming monitor with a high refresh rate, after all, it's not just about Mafia. The computer is a station for many games, including competitive multiplayer ones, where extra frames give a good advantage.
Ultra system requirements for Mafia: Definitive Edition for 4K | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 10/11 |
Processor | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 |
RAM | 32 GB |
Disk Space | 50 GB on SSD |
This set of requirements is for gamers who don’t settle for compromises. Although the engine in Mafia 3 was poorly optimized for 4K, we hope this will change in the future. To achieve 70+ FPS at 4K in a computer for Mafia: Definitive Edition, the components listed below are required.
How to Choose a Computer for Mafia: Definitive Edition
The demand for processors hasn't grown at all, as the system requirements for Mafia: Definitive Edition almost completely mirror those for Mafia 3. The recommended processor has 4 cores because the game can no longer stress a higher core count, so a chip with a good clock speed is needed.
The graphics card, as always, is the most important component for gaming. The GTX 780 3 GB has similar memory to the lower version of the GTX 1060, but there are doubts about whether that amount will be enough.
Graphics Card
To roughly estimate the performance of top-end graphics cards in this game, you can look at the tests of NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards in the most similar Mafia 3. The graphic settings are at maximum, with anti-aliasing enabled and vertical sync disabled.
Frames per Second | 1920x1080 (FullHD) | 2560x1440 (QuadHD) | 3840x2160 (4K) |
---|---|---|---|
RTX 2080 Ti | 145 | 126 | 75 |
RTX 2080 SUPER | 139 | 109 | 59 |
RTX 2080 | 128 | 98 | 56 |
RTX 2070 SUPER | 119 | 92 | 51 |
RTX 2070 | 109 | 87 | 45 |
RTX 2060 SUPER | 102 | 81 | 43 |
RTX 2060 | 95 | 74 | 37 |
As you can see, almost all recent cards easily handle the game in FullHD, and there is no reason to believe that this will change by the time Mafia: Definitive Edition is released. Even if the developers add more demanding textures, the RTX 2060 already has 8 GB of VRAM, which will be enough for any game in the foreseeable future.
How Much VRAM is Needed
Mafia 3 used up to 3926 MB at 4K resolution, 3224 MB at 2K, and was limited to 2442 MB at FullHD, all with maximum graphics settings. Therefore, any modern card should have more than enough, even if a high-resolution texture pack is released.
Processor
The Illusion Engine used to load 8 threads on 4 physical cores. This means it doesn’t use more than 8. It’s not necessary to buy a processor with 8 physical cores, as the latest Intel Core i5-10600K, unlike the 9th series, supports Hyper-Threading. This allows the i5-10600K to work with 6 physical cores and have 12 threads. This is more than sufficient for modern gaming at FullHD and 2K.
If you plan to stream, blog, or actively use 2K and VR, you’ll need a more powerful processor. The Intel Core i7-10700K is a new model from the popular series, and among its predecessors are the legendary i7-3770K and i7-6700K. These two models still perform excellently and are some of the most popular processors among gamers. However, buying outdated models is not the best option, and the Intel Core i7-10700K is a worthy successor to its older brothers.
RAM
Different games react differently to fast memory, depending on the system as a whole. If there are no "bottlenecks" in the computer’s build and the performance is limited by the speed of RAM, overclocking it can provide a significant performance boost of up to 30%.
Using modern RAM with high frequency is not a luxury but a way to increase FPS. Good gaming DDR4 memory starts at 2666 MHz, but it’s better to use 3200 MHz if the processor supports that frequency.
Storage
For Mafia: Definitive Edition, the computer’s storage size is listed, but the quality of the storage is not specified. This is very important – 50 GB is a large game, though not a record-breaker. File loading and unloading into RAM and the GPU will take a lot of time if a regular HDD is used. This issue can be solved by installing an additional SSD.
An SSD is a fast storage device that is a mandatory attribute of modern computers, with read/write speeds several times higher than the fastest HDD. Top M.2 models can reach read/write speeds of up to 3.5 GB/s. For comparison, a regular HDD has maximum speeds around 200-230 MB/s, or 0.2-0.23 GB/s. A classic 2.5” SATA SSD has maximum speeds of 500-560 MB/s, or 0.5-0.56 GB/s.
Top SSD M.2 models are almost 7 times faster than their counterparts. You can install the system, games, and programs on it, and you’ll experience a significant performance boost. The only downside is that you’ll never know what developers are writing on their game loading screens.
