DayZ Standalone is an open-world zombie survival game. Initially launched as a mod for ArmA 2, it evolved into an independent project thanks to strong community support. Developed by Bohemia Interactive, it first appeared in early access in 2013 and officially released in 2018. A PS4 version followed in 2019.

Story
The storyline in DayZ isn’t particularly deep, aside from numerous fanfictions. The game takes place in the fictional post-Soviet country of Chernarus, featuring landscapes reminiscent of rural Russia.
Following a mysterious cataclysm, humanity has been turned into aggressive zombies. These aren’t the sluggish zombies of "The Walking Dead"—they are fast, dangerous monsters. Your mission is simple: survive.
In addition to zombies, you’ll face threats like hypothermia, hunger, dehydration, and injuries. Eating spoiled food or drinking unpurified water could lead to infections. Radiation and toxic gas exposure are also deadly. As in any classic zombie apocalypse, even minor injuries from zombies can prove fatal.
Death in DayZ is permanent. There are no saves or respawns—you die, you start over. While hidden stashes may help, other survivors can find them and strip them clean.
Gameplay
You spawn with nothing and must scavenge nearby houses, garages, and buildings for loot. Resources spawn periodically, depending on the server settings.
Because supplies are scarce and dangers are many, survival is a constant struggle. Hypothermia, hunger, and dehydration can kill you faster than zombies or players.
DayZ’s core challenge is simple: survive. If you neglect your basic needs, the environment will quickly punish you—even minor mistakes can be fatal.
Multiplayer
Other survivors are often your greatest threat. Competition for resources is fierce, and betrayal is common. Sometimes it’s easier for players to silently ambush you rather than waste expensive ammo and risk attracting zombies.
It’s a brutal, unforgiving world requiring constant vigilance. Even the most experienced players can fall to an unexpected attack.
Graphics and Engine
Originally based on the Real Virtuality 3 engine (from ArmA 2), DayZ switched to Bohemia's own Enfusion Engine starting from version 0.60. This more modern engine brings faster performance and better visuals.
Unlike many modern games, DayZ wasn't initially designed for consoles. On PC, it remains a true PC experience with responsive mouse control and unique system demands.
System Requirements
Since the project had limited investment, the graphics are not cutting-edge. As a result, DayZ's system requirements are relatively low and accessible for most modern gaming PCs. Despite being visually modest, the graphics fit the game's style well.
At maximum settings, the visuals are quite pleasant. However, you might notice lower detail on certain objects like hands or picked-up items, revealing the game's roots in pre-existing assets rather than being built entirely from scratch.
Minimum System Requirements for DayZ | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 7/8/8.1/10 |
Processor | Intel Core i5-4430 |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 760 |
RAM | 8 GB |
Storage | 16 GB |
With this hardware, you’ll be running the game at HD resolution with 40–50 FPS and blurry textures. These minimum requirements are not ideal for a competitive experience, where FPS and smoothness are crucial for survival.
Recommended System Requirements for DayZ | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 7/8/8.1/10 |
Processor | Intel Core i5-6600K |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 |
RAM | 12 GB |
Storage | 25 GB |
These specs allow you to enjoy the game at high settings in Full HD with roughly 60 FPS. However, developers often underestimate system requirements, so it’s wise to choose a PC that exceeds these specs for a smoother experience.
Max System Requirements for 4K Gaming | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 10 |
Processor | Intel Core i7-10700K |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti |
RAM | 16 GB |
Storage | 50 GB SSD |
Note that these are not official specs but based on tests and PC building experience. A rig with these specs ensures smooth Full HD and 2K gaming. For pure 2K gaming, an RTX 3070 would be even better.
Ultra System Requirements for 4K Gaming | |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 10/11 |
Processor | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 |
RAM | 32 GB |
Storage | 50 GB SSD |
This kind of build ensures maximum comfort in 4K gaming. It can handle not only DayZ but any modern AAA title at ultra settings, including mod installations if desired.
How to Choose a PC for DayZ
The most critical component of a gaming PC is the graphics card. For DayZ, you don’t necessarily need ultra-expensive components. A GTX 1060 can deliver stable 60 FPS at reasonable settings. However, it's wise to build a PC with future-proofing in mind, especially if you're targeting 2K resolution or higher.
Games are only becoming more demanding. If Cyberpunk 2077 already pushed PCs hard, future titles like The Witcher 4 and TES 6 will demand even more. Buying a PC today means aiming for at least 3–4 years of high-end performance.
Graphics Card
Benchmark tests are the only real measure of a GPU's performance. Below is a table showing FPS for different GPUs at various resolutions on maximum settings.
FPS | 1920x1080 (FullHD) | 2560x1440 (QuadHD) | 3840x2160 (4K UHD) |
---|---|---|---|
RTX 3090 | 160+ | 160+ | 98 |
RTX 3080 | 152 | 131 | 66 |
RTX 3070 | 127 | 96 | 56 |
RTX 3060 Ti | 110 | 84 | 49 |
RTX 2080 Ti | 139 | 127 | 58 |
RTX 2080 SUPER | 119 | 105 | 46 |
RTX 2080 | 106 | 92 | 35 |
RTX 2070 SUPER | 102 | 84 | Not Playable |
RTX 2070 | 93 | 78 | Not Playable |
RTX 2060 SUPER | 91 | 76 | Not Playable |
RTX 2060 | 85 | 62 | Not Playable |
GTX 1660 Ti | 79 | 54 | Not Playable |
GTX 1660 SUPER | 77 | 52 | Not Playable |
As you can see, modern GPUs easily handle Full HD, but for 2K and 2.5K gaming, stronger cards like RTX 2080 SUPER, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 are highly recommended.
Monitor
Don’t overlook your monitor. In DayZ, night-time exploration is unavoidable. An IPS panel is crucial for better visibility in the dark, even if it has slightly slower response times (up to 6ms is acceptable).
Processor
DayZ is an exception among modern games, requiring a more powerful CPU due to its open-world scale and simulation complexity.
- Basic CPUs: Intel Core i5-10400(F), i5-10600(F), i5-10600K(F); AMD Ryzen 5 3500X, 5 3600X, 5 5600X
These are ideal for most gamers targeting Full HD and 2K gaming at high settings.
- Gaming CPUs: Intel Core i7-10700(F), i7-10700K(F); i9-10900K(F); AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
Designed for streamers, content creators, and heavy multitaskers, these CPUs also handle 2.5K and 4K gaming easily.
- Professional CPUs: Intel Core i9-10900X, i9-10920X, i9-10940X, i9-10980XE; AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, 9 5950X
Top-tier workstation CPUs for extreme builds, multi-GPU setups, and even 8K gaming scenarios.
