Resident Evil 4 Remake is a reissue of the classic horror game with action elements. Improvements have affected almost all aspects of the game, from audio and video to gameplay mechanics enhancements. It was with the fourth installment of Resident Evil that the action third-person genre began to develop.

Plot

The overall storyline of the remake remains unchanged. Former police officer and current government agent Leon S. Kennedy is tasked with finding the president's daughter. She has been kidnapped and taken to a remote Spanish mountain village, whose inhabitants are members of the Los Illuminados cult and mutants at the same time. Most of the villagers will be hostile towards the player, and they must strive to complete the mission and stay alive. There have been some changes to the plot twists. For example, unlike the original, it will not be possible to save a dog trapped in a trap.

Those who played the original will immediately recognize familiar locations, which have not changed much in terms of level design but have become more spacious and darker in places. The design and layout of almost all buildings remain unchanged, but they have gained new colors. The buildings have become more decorated, with the ability to interact with the environment, explore, and solve puzzles. It is worth noting that the overall atmosphere of the game has become darker, and character and environment models have become more realistic.

The remake has become more interactive, allowing players to interact with numerous items in the game world. Some items will attract the attention of enemies and divert them from the hero's path, while others can be used in combat to inflict more damage on enemies.

In addition to interactivity, stealth has been introduced. Now players can stealthily pass by hostile villagers or eliminate them discreetly.

The artificial intelligence of enemies has become more advanced. They can set up ambushes for the hero and act more cohesively in combat. NPCs will pursue the hero for longer and actively penetrate into the rooms where they will hide and catch their breath. Overall, enemies have become more aggressive, and their attacks have become more diverse and deadly.

Bosses have become more resilient and have also received new sets of attacks. Shotguns will no longer be a panacea in battles with them; players will have to learn the patterns of their attacks to avoid frequent restarts of the encounter. In terms of visual design, some enemies have remained practically unchanged, while others have been thoroughly reworked.

Players will have to thoroughly explore the game's locations to find a way to access locked rooms, discover weapons and ammunition. In the later installments of the series, a crafting system for medicines and ammunition was introduced, which the developers decided to add to the remake as well.

Overall, the game remains recognizable, but all the new additions make it feel like a completely new game. Those who played the original should definitely try the remake for new experiences.

Perks, Weapons, and Combat System

The game introduces a system of passive perks that can be obtained using different sets of amulets. The inventory, which is represented by the hero's case, has also been modified. It can be upgraded to increase its capacity, which was always lacking in the original. Moreover, now most resources, such as herbs, will occupy space in the inventory, which was not the case in the original.

The arsenal of weapons will include both old and new models. Most of the weapons have their own perks (triple headshot damage, obstacle penetration, etc.). New weapons are more focused on stealth as they shoot silent bolts that can be retrieved from enemies. Weapons can be assigned to quick access keys, and there is no need to go into the inventory to switch guns. Players can carry up to 8 units of weapons at once.

The combat system remains almost unchanged, with hand-to-hand combat moves and shooting at enemies' weak points. In addition to the existing combat mechanics, the ability to parry enemy strikes has been introduced, which was not present in the original. Even powerful attacks can be deflected with Leon's knife, which can break at the most inconvenient moment if parry is used frequently. The knife can be repaired for a fee from a local merchant. To fix it yourself, specific resources must be available in the inventory. The knife can also be used for quick finishing moves on disabled enemies.
