Even in ancient chronicles about computer games, a certain project called Fortnite was mentioned. The first records date back to 2011. In 2014, the alpha version was released and gradually began to gain strength. In 2017, it began to be sold with the label "Early Access". Developers from Epic Games are waiting for the right moment to officially declare their brainchild ready.
The release was planned for 2018, with the main change when transitioning to version 1.0 being the F2P (free-to-play) system. But with the caveat that players will have to buy game items for real money. The creators themselves say that we can expect a conditionally free project. Donations are not mandatory for playing, but they do not hide the fact that they will do everything possible to compel payments.
In 2018, the developers announced that 78.3 million people play on their servers each month. This is a huge number. Interesting fact: 7.78% of all global online game traffic goes to Fortnite. Of all the games, Fortnite takes second place - 14.85% of game traffic, second only to League of Legends - 26.42%.
Gameplay
Fortnite is actively developing and constantly adding new features: seasonal modes, battle passes, events, skins, and items. At the moment, the game has 4 main modes with their own gameplay features.
Fortnite: Battle Royale
The main highlight of the cartoon shooter! It resembles a conditionally free PUBG. Anyone can try the famous Battle Royale mode in this game for free. It is clear that the developers wanted to add popularity to their game by creating hype around the well-known PUBG. But a similar mode in Fortnite cannot be called a fake.
The rules are classic: 100 people on the map, the combat zone narrows to the center, only one survives. The difference is that you can build structures here. Materials available are wood, iron, and brick. Don't be surprised if you find a new fort in the middle of a recent field. Reading the opponent becomes more difficult because you know for sure that he is somewhere nearby. The owner sits in the house or waits outside to shoot you - it's a question.
Classic mode
Also known as "Storm Defense", it looks like a mix of Minecraft and Left 4 Dead, according to Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney. The match is divided into two parts - day and night. At night, players defend themselves against zombie attacks, and during the day, they can gather resources, build, and craft.
Collecting resources is very entertaining, you can dismantle anything. There is enough time, in different missions up to 20 minutes. There are also no restrictions on construction, take material with you and build whatever and wherever you want. It's pure Minecraft, but there is a goal - to survive the night.
As soon as preparations are complete, they come out - the walking dead. Maps in Fortnite are generated randomly. Not all, there are story ones, they are drawn in advance. But in all the others, you will have to improvise. The defense object and enemy spawn points are always in different places and cannot be predicted in advance.
Fortnite: Battle Royale
The boundless sandbox of Fortnite, where anyone can create their own island, arrange it to their liking, share it with friends, and even offer their creation as a new game map!
Here you can also create your own game with your own rules or play a bunch of modes from other community authors that are regularly updated.
"Ground Zero"
A simplified interpretation of "Battle Royale" - without building. The only defensive device here is a rechargeable super shield. But don't sit in hiding waiting for it to recover all the time: if you're not caught by players, the shrinking zone will definitely catch up with you. This mode implies a dynamic playstyle with tactical elements. The more active you move, aim, and dodge, the higher your chance of winning.
You can play in "Ground Zero" mode alone, in pairs, in threes, or in a team of 4 players.

Is there esports in Fortnite or not?
Since 2018, Fortnite has been developing into something more than just a multiplayer action game, namely, into an esports discipline. The first private tournament for this game under the name Lyon e-Sport 2018 was held in France. 48 teams took part in the competition, and the prize pool was €7,000.
And in the summer of 2019, the first major and official tournament from Epic Games took place - the Fortnite Celebrity Pro-Am. The competition was held in "Duo" mode among 50 pairs of participants, and the prize this time was much more impressive - 3 million dollars. In the same year, after a certain series of competitions, the Fortnite World Cup was held, which to this day is considered the most prestigious world tournament in Fortnite with the largest prize pools and is held every year.
In connection with these events, since 2019, Fortnite has a special competitive mode "Arena", which allows players with the same skill level to fight in a professional environment without leaving their own computer. Gamers have the opportunity to unlock access to the qualifying matches of the Fortnite World Cup or to one of the weekly events with a cash reward.
Fortnite system requirements
PUBG and Fortnite are made on the same engine - Unreal Engine 4. But the game is much more stable, there is no FPS drop and lag. It is difficult to call it a fake, especially cheap. Technical component 10 out of 10.
Graphic settings are very wide, the minimum settings uglify the game to the fullest, but allow it to be launched even on calculators.
All the beauty that the artists drew must be seen. At maximum settings, the game pulls a lot of resources from the video card and processor, but it is worth it. I would like to praise the developers for the ability to finely tune. You can always reduce the parameters that load the processor if it is weak. At the same time, you can leave graphic settings that load the video card.
Minimum system requirements
To meet the minimum system requirements, the computer must have been assembled 10 years ago. With such hardware, you can play in HD resolution with minimal settings.
CPU | Intel Core i5 или AMD Ryzen 5 |
---|---|
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 |
RAM | 8 GB DDR4 with a frequency of 3200 MHz |
Disk Space | 12 GB на SSD |
Recommended system requirements
Such a computer will run the game on medium-high settings with FHD resolution. But the developers recommend a weak video card, it is better to provide yourself with a power reserve.
CPU | Intel Core i5 или AMD Ryzen 5 |
---|---|
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 |
RAM | 16 GB DDR4 with a frequency of 3600 MHz |
Disk Space | 12 GB on SSD |
Optimal system requirements
Today's Fortnite is significantly different from the original in terms of the amount of content provided. To enable the system to easily load all this at maximum settings at 1440p, the setup below is suitable.
CPU | Intel Core i5 или AMD Ryzen 5 |
---|---|
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 |
RAM | 16 GB DDR4 with a frequency of 3600 MHz |
Disk Space | 12 GB on SSD |
Maximum system requirements
With this configuration, the computer will run all modern games even in 4K resolution. The amount of RAM is indicated with a margin, even in the most difficult moments, Fortnite takes no more than 6.6 GB of RAM along with the system. Configurations will also be enough for high-resolution game streaming.
CPU | Intel Core i7/i9 или AMD Ryzen 7/9 |
---|---|
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 |
RAM | 16 GB DDR4 with a frequency of 3600 MHz |
Disk Space | 12 GB on SSD |
What should be the computer for Fortnite?
The rare case when a powerful processor and graphics card are needed. Compromises for those who are ready to look for them. Gaming at maximum settings is an opportunity to get the most out of any game.
Sufficient video memory is needed to not overload the additional RAM and not provoke freezes. For FHD, 4 GB is enough, video cards with a smaller amount are already obsolete, even the most budget models have such a reserve.
The game does not consume much RAM, but given that Fortnite is a multiplayer project, a messenger and browser in the background will be required for communication, listening to music, and other joys of life. This requires RAM.
A powerful processor is required, even on minimum settings, developers recommend i3. Physics is not the last thing, and all its calculations fall on the fragile shoulders of a stone under the radiator.
How to choose a graphics card for Fortnite?
The table shows a list of graphics cards and the number of FPS they can deliver at different screen resolutions. The tests were conducted at maximum settings. Other top-notch components cannot affect the frame rate.
Using a resolution higher than QuadHD for this game is possible, but currently not necessary. Support for 2160p is being developed for the latest generation consoles, and the situation with the PC version is still unclear. At the moment, Fortnite cannot provide such a beautiful image that there is a difference on screens with FHD, 2K, and 4K. The number of frames has no restrictions - the more, the better, and the game is a e-sport discipline where high FPS plays a big role.
As seen from the table, the game is not yet optimized for 4K. There is currently no support for two graphics cards in SLI or Crossfire mode, but it is not necessary.
FPS | 1920x1080 (FullHD) |
2560x1440 (QuadHD) |
3840x2160 (UltraHD) |
---|---|---|---|
GeForce RTX 4060 Ti | 168 | 113 | 68 |
GeForce RTX 4070 | 200 | 135 | 84 |
GeForce RTX 4070 Ti | 242 | 162 | 98 |
GeForce RTX 4080 | 300 | 201 | 122 |
GeForce RTX 4090 | 395 | 261 | 157 |
FPS indicators are averaged and serve to demonstrate the relative performance of the system at maximum graphics settings.
How much video memory do you need?
The amount of video memory is not a sentence. If you have a card with less memory, you need to lower the texture quality. The game will use smaller environment skins. They are not as beautiful, but they take up less memory.
- FHD (Epic) - 4 GB (3 GB used);
- 2K (Epic) - 6 GB (4.6 GB used);
- 4K (Epic) - from 8 GB (5.5 GB used).
How to choose a processor for Fortnite?
It is best to give an example in the table. Here are the top processors from Intel that have been tested with the game. The test bench has the best components, including the graphics card. RTX 4090 was used in all tests and could not be the limiting factor.
The dynamics of the FPS growth depending on the clock frequency on budget models (they are not in the table) are well noticeable. To save money, you can take a weaker processor, but with the "K" designation, such stones are ready to overclock at the software level. It will only be necessary to install a more powerful cooling system on the processor and power supply chain on the motherboard.
The game uses up to 8 computational threads, but only 4 are mainly loaded. A processor with more cores will not give a noticeable increase in power. These recommendations can also be applied to other games on the Unreal Engine 4, of which there are many.
FPS | 1920x1080 (FullHD) |
2560x1440 (QuadHD) |
---|---|---|
Intel Core i5-13400(F) | 215 | 183 |
Intel Core i5-13600K(F) | 223 | 189 |
Intel Core i7-13700K(F) | 232 | 191 |
Intel Core i9-13900K(F) | 239 | 192 |
How much RAM do you need?
The difference between larger and smaller resolutions does not exceed 2 GB. So, 16 GB of RAM will be optimal for any monitor. The minimum on a clean computer without additional programs is 8 GB.
The amount of consumed memory also depends on the amount of VRAM (graphics card memory). Usually, on cards with less memory, the game tries to use more RAM. But this can lead to frame drops and stuttering in the game.
Is it worth getting an SSD for Fortnite?
The computer needs speed. SSD drives add significant speed. This drive is more expensive than a regular HDD, but is 3 to 25 times faster. There are many models on the market, two main types of connections differ in transfer speed. Some drives connect via the good old SATA 3, while others connect directly to the motherboard - the M.2 form factor. The speed of the latter is incredible - up to 5/7 GB per second for write/read.
It is better to combine SSD and HDD: the first for the system, programs, and games, and the second for large files for long-term storage.
How to build a computer for Fortnite on your own?
At the beginning of building a PC, you need to determine the budget for the components and the case with decorations. It is advisable to divide and count them separately.
From the budget for the components, it is necessary to allocate 40-50% for the graphics card and 20-30% for the processor. Their power should be proportional so that one component does not slow down the other.
The graphics card is universal and will work with any PC. All components are selected to match the processor, which is the main component.
The motherboard should provide everything necessary and not burn out in the process. For example, if you are planning to overclock the processor, it should be provided for. If there is not enough cooling on the power circuit, the capacitors will quickly swell and stop working.
With RAM in a computer, the more and faster, the better. The modern type is DDR4, the newer and more advanced is DDR5. Building a gaming computer on DDR3 is a bad idea, as this type of memory is already outdated. The higher the frequency, the better, but it is limited by the processor, so check the characteristics.
The power supply is selected as follows: the sum of the power consumption of all components +30%. Do not take cheap power supplies for a gaming computer. It is a guarantee of the safety of expensive internal components. During power fluctuations, overheating, short circuits, and other unpleasant events, the power supply should take the blow itself, not send it to the graphics card that costs 50% of the entire computer.
Cooling is a sore topic for home builders. Powerful gaming hardware heats up a lot and needs to dissipate heat. To do this, it is necessary to install powerful radiators inside and make the case well-ventilated. At first glance, there are no difficulties, but dust in the case due to incorrect assembly has burned out more hardware than power surges in the electrical network.
These problems can be avoided by buying a ready-made system unit, which is 100% properly constructed. It will not overheat and will provide the required power, and if necessary, even more.
