How to choose a PC for work

Computer for work

Modern games are so demanding that gaming PCs can handle complex professional tasks well. However, this doesn't mean you should choose gaming PCs for working in programs. For professional tasks, it's better to choose workstations. Let's take a look at how to choose them and what to pay attention to when buying.

Choosing a PC for work: what to consider

Do I need to look at the system requirements of programs?

Different professional tasks require different computers. Some models are best suited for video editing, others for engineering design, and others for machine learning. To determine which workstation to choose, you first need to look at the system requirements of the programs you plan to use. These can always be found in the descriptions on official websites.

Developers often underestimate the system requirements of programs. Even if you build a computer with the components listed in the recommended requirements, you won't get high performance. Therefore, for work, it's better to choose a computer that's more powerful than the configuration listed in the requirements.

Which PC is suitable for work?

A computer is defined by its components, and that's what you should focus on. Performance in programs will depend on:

  • processor;
  • graphics card;
  • RAM;
  • storage type.
Intel CPU

What processor is needed for work?

For professional tasks, two processor characteristics are important:

  • generation;
  • number of cores.

The more modern the processor generation, the higher its performance. The following generations are currently relevant:

  • AMD Ryzen 5000;
  • AMD Ryzen 7000;
  • AMD Ryzen 9000;
  • Intel Core 12000;
  • Intel Core 13000;
  • Intel Core 14000;
  • Intel Core Ultra.

The number of cores also affects the processor's performance in programs. The more cores, the better. Multi-core processors significantly reduce render times and improve performance in programs and applications.

Choosing a specific processor model depends on your tasks. For example, programming can be handled by a budget device. For 3D modeling, a powerful multi-core model is needed, such as Intel Core i7-14700K or AMD Ryzen 9 9950X. For machine learning, a flagship processor might be required, such as AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7995WX.

Graphics card

What graphics card is needed for work?

Only NVIDIA graphics cards are suitable for work. Their graphic accelerators have the CUDA parallel computation technology. All modern programs and applications are optimized for this technology.

When choosing a graphics card, look at:

  • model;
  • video memory size.

The older the model and the larger its memory size, the higher the performance in programs. The choice of a specific graphics card model depends on your tasks. For example, video editing in Full HD resolution without complex color correction and post-processing can be handled by the affordable GeForce RTX 4060. However, for working with neural networks, even a GeForce RTX 4090 may not be enough, and you may need a more powerful accelerator, such as NVIDIA Quadro RTX 6000 Ada Generation.

Computer memory

What RAM is needed for work?

Even the most powerful CPUs won't ensure good performance if there are issues with the RAM.

The main characteristics of RAM for workstations:

  • size;
  • standard.

The amount of RAM directly affects the performance of programs. If there is too little RAM, you simply won’t be able to work in applications. Programs will crash, freeze, or constantly show errors.

The specific RAM size depends on the programs you plan to use. For example, code-writing applications aren't demanding, often needing just 16GB of RAM. On the other hand, 3D modeling software requires a larger amount of RAM. Workstations for 3D modeling typically have 64, 128, 256, or even 512 GB of RAM.

The RAM standard influences its speed. The faster the RAM and CPU exchange data, the higher the performance in programs.

AMD Ryzen 7000 and 9000 processors only work with DDR5 memory. Intel Core 12000, 13000, and 14000 models can work with both DDR5 and DDR4. A modern workstation should have DDR5 RAM. This is the latest standard, offering a significant performance boost over older DDR4 RAM.

What storage is needed for work?

It's highly recommended not to install programs and the operating system on hard drives, as they are too slow and will significantly hinder the computer’s performance. SSD drives, on the other hand, are very fast. With them, a PC will boot in a matter of seconds, and heavy programs and files will open instantly. Therefore, having a solid-state drive in a workstation is essential.

This doesn't mean you should completely abandon hard drives. They are perfect for storing work files. But installing programs and the OS on them is not recommended.

The speed characteristics of SSDs depend on the connection interface. Today, the following are common:

  • SATA III;
  • PCI-E 3.0;
  • PCI-E 4.0.

A modern workstation should have a drive with a PCI-E 4.0 interface. These are currently the most optimal SSDs in terms of speed and price. More modern drives with a PCI-E 5.0 interface have only recently appeared on the market, but they are very expensive and offer no speed advantage when working with small files.

Cooling system

Cooling system and power supply in a workstation

Components in professional PCs generate a lot of heat. To prevent throttling, an effective cooling system is needed. It should consist of:

  • Several case fans to expel hot air outside the case and draw in cold air from outside.
  • Metal heatsinks to absorb excess heat from all hot components (RAM modules, VRM zone, SSD).

The power supply affects the longevity and stability of the components. If expensive components are powered by a low-quality source, they won’t last long. The power supply in a workstation should meet the following criteria:

  • 80 PLUS Bronze, Gold, or higher certification;
  • Japanese capacitors from Rubycon, Nichicon, or Nippon Chemi-Con. Taiwanese capacitors are also acceptable.

These characteristics indirectly guarantee the quality of the power supply.

Choosing a computer for work: conclusion

To choose a workstation:

  • First, review the system requirements of the programs you plan to use.
  • Then, look at the components, as they determine performance in applications.
  • Don't forget that the cooling system and power supply significantly affect stability and longevity.
