NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 vs 4090

GeForce RTX 5090

At first glance, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 graphics card differs from the 4090 only in its increased video memory and slightly increased power. In reality, this is not the case. Today we will talk about the main differences between the GeForce RTX 5090 and the 4090, and discuss whether it is worth buying a previous-generation accelerator in 2025.

Gaming Performance

According to tests without enabling DLSS anti-aliasing and ray tracing technology, the gaming performance of the RTX 5090 has increased by 15-35%. The exact value depends on the specific project, the set resolution and graphics settings.

If we compare the performance of video cards with ray tracing and DLSS anti-aliasing enabled (without activating frame generation), the difference becomes even greater in favor of the new product. This is due to the new RT and tensor cores, which have become much more powerful. NVIDIA has significantly increased their power and quantity, which has accelerated the execution of operations with ray tracing and neural networks.

Gaming Performance with Frame Generation

The biggest difference between video cards in games is achieved when Frame Generate technology is enabled. NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 supports multi-frame generation. Unlike regular generation, this technology adds not one, but several intermediate frames between real ones, which significantly increases FPS and picture smoothness.

For example, in Cyberpunk 2077, the performance difference between video cards is more than 100%. That is, when multi-frame generation is enabled, the FPS on the RTX 5090 will be 2 times higher than on the RTX 4090 with regular frame generation.

Performance in Work Tasks

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 received 32 GB of video memory. This is 8 GB more than the RTX 4090. In addition, the speed of the video memory has also increased. If the previous generation video card had GDDR6X standard chips, then the new accelerator has GDDR7. This made it possible to increase the memory bandwidth by approximately 80%.

The above does not give a significant advantage in games, since they do not need so much memory. But in work tasks, the opposite is true. The increased amount of video buffer and the increased speed of memory chips have made the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 the best professional accelerator in terms of price and performance.

The power difference between the cards strongly depends on the specific task and program. For example, due to the improved video memory and new 9th generation NVENC decoders, the RTX 5090 is approximately 60% faster at encoding video in editing applications, and in 3D modeling programs the rendering speed difference is around 30-50%.

Energy Consumption

Energy consumption is the only area where the new product loses. The GeForce RTX 5090 consumes 125 W more power compared to the RTX 4090. This means that a 1000 W power supply may not be enough. It is recommended to install a 1200 W PSU in a computer with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 video card.

However, this does not mean that the PC will not work with a less powerful power supply. It is quite possible that all other components of your PC do not consume much. For example, 200 or 250 W. In this case, even a 1000 W power supply will be enough for the RTX 5090, and you will still have a small margin.

GeForce RTX 5090 vs 4090: Conclusion

If we compare the RTX 5090 against the RTX 4090, the new product is:

  • 15-35% more powerful in games without ray tracing and DLSS enabled;
  • approximately 1.5 times more powerful in games with ray tracing and DLSS enabled;
  • 2 times more powerful in games with ray tracing, DLSS, and multi-frame generation;
  • approximately 1.5 times more powerful in work programs and applications.

The only drawback of the new product compared to the 4090 is the increased power consumption by 125 W. In all other respects, the 5090 significantly surpasses the previous generation flagship. Considering the same price, we recommend installing the new product in PCs and not considering buying the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.
