The novel *Metro 2033* by Dmitry Glukhovsky was published in 2005. It tells the story of people forced to survive in the tunnels of the Moscow Metro after a nuclear war. The explosions wiped out almost all life on the surface, and the surviving creatures mutated into terrifying monsters.

The first part of the game based on the novel was released in 2010 under the title *Metro 2033*. It was developed by the Ukrainian studio 4A Games, which was mostly formed by people who left GSC Game World — the team behind *S.T.A.L.K.E.R.*

Based on sales, the first game wasn’t hugely popular, although it gained a dedicated fanbase worldwide. The second part, *Metro: Last Light*, received very positive press, especially in the Russian-speaking media. The third installment — *Metro: Exodus* — is scheduled to be released on February 15, 2019.

The game is a shooter with RPG elements, continuing the series’ legacy without major changes. However, it now looks significantly more polished, vibrant, and high-end.

The Game World

While earlier we were confined to the corridors of the Moscow Metro, this time the developers have sent the protagonist, Artyom, and his wife out into the open. There’s still radiation, monsters, and a massive arsenal of weapons. One might even mistake it for *S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2* — but it’s not.

The locations are vast, and the game begins in the "Volga" region, where you’re free to explore the surroundings. The maps are quite large, but the transitions between them follow a traditional shooter level design — albeit beautifully crafted.

Gameplay

The main difference between *Metro: Exodus* and a full-fledged RPG is the lack of an open world map. The locations are large and filled with interesting side content, but the progression is still linear.

The gameplay trailers showcased a wide range of weapon customization. Every gun in the game is heavily styled to match the post-apocalyptic DIY aesthetic. You’ll notice rough welding seams, parts wrapped in blue tape, and colorful wires sticking out in all directions. In one trailer, a baby-blue mailbox was even used as an ammo drum. A basic revolver can be outfitted with different stocks, grips, barrels, scopes, and more. Other gear can also be upgraded — for example, attaching a flashlight to your helmet.

Aside from gunfights, stealth will be a major gameplay element. According to the developers, it’s been deeply integrated. Detection depends on multiple factors like light level and walking style. While not groundbreaking, this system gives *Metro: Exodus* an alternative path for progression. Mutants generally don’t care how sneaky you are — but humans can definitely be outsmarted.

Graphics

We could talk about the graphics for hours — but it's better to see them once. They’re stunning, especially if the final game matches what was shown in the gameplay trailers.

Like other titles in the series, *Metro: Exodus* likely won’t be well-optimized at launch. You’ll need a high-performance system, especially in the early days after release. Optimization might improve over time, making the game more accessible — but for now, only owners of upper-tier gaming PCs will be able to enjoy it to the fullest.

Metro Exodus System Requirements

Since the game's announcement, the developers have released three completely different sets of system requirements. Below are the most recent ones. One thing is clear — *Metro Exodus* will not run well on low-end PCs. At least 2 GB of video memory is needed for Full HD resolution, even on minimum settings.

It’s worth noting that medium and high graphics settings can only be enabled with DirectX 12, which is supported exclusively on Windows 10. So if you're using a different version of Windows, you'll need to upgrade. Additionally, your GPU must support DX12 — otherwise, only minimum settings will be available.

The game supports NVIDIA's ray tracing technology. To experience *Metro Exodus* in its full visual glory, you'll need one of NVIDIA's latest RTX graphics cards, as only the RTX series supports real-time ray tracing.

Minimum System Requirements
Operating System Windows 7/8.1/10
Processor Intel Core i5-4440
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, GTX 1050
RAM 8 GB
Storage 59 GB

According to the developers, this configuration should be enough to run the game at minimum settings in Full HD at 30 FPS. However, stability is not guaranteed — in intense firefights, the FPS may drop to unplayable levels.

Recommended System Requirements
Operating System Windows 10
Processor Intel Core i7 4770K
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070, RTX 2060
RAM 8 GB
Storage 59 GB

This configuration is suitable for Full HD resolution with high graphics settings and will deliver 60 FPS. The two listed GPUs offer different features — the older GTX 1070 lacks some of the advanced technologies found in the RTX series.

Maximum Requirements for 4K
Operating System Windows 10/11
Processor AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D
Graphics Card NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
RAM 32 GB
Storage 59 GB on SSD

This setup is for gamers who won’t settle for compromises.

How to Choose a PC for Metro Exodus?

The game hasn’t been released yet, so there are no up-to-date performance tests — but we can rely on developer information. You’ll need a very high-performance system, as the Kyiv-based team aimed for top-tier visuals. This quality was achieved thanks to their collaboration with NVIDIA and the implementation of ray tracing technology. Turning it off means sacrificing that cinematic and realistic look. That’s why an RTX graphics card is highly recommended.

The system requirements revealed by the developers may seem intimidating, but in reality, it’s not that bad. Any game with great visuals eventually finds its audience — even among those with mid-range PCs.

Choosing the right processor depends on your monitor and graphics card. There’s no point in buying a GPU more powerful than your CPU can handle — otherwise, it won’t be fully utilized. The new RTX line is best paired with Intel’s 8th or 9th generation CPUs or AMD equivalents.

Choosing a Graphics Card

Fortunately, the developers shared the PC requirements for *Metro: Exodus* in advance. The conclusion is clear — for high settings, you’ll need top-tier GPUs.

If you're building a new system, look into the RTX series. These cards support ray tracing and handle VR devices well. They’re future-proof components.

If you’ve decided ray tracing isn’t for you and Full HD is enough, then the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 is a great option. It handles *Metro: Exodus* on ultra settings in Full HD and is capable of supporting multiple monitors in other games.

If you're on a tight budget, consider a PC with the GTX 1050 Ti. Unlike the regular 1050, the Ti version has 4 GB of memory, while the standard one has only 2 GB. In 2019, 2 GB of VRAM is quite limited — suitable only for low-demand online games.

The minimum system requirements for *Metro: Exodus* are quite reasonable. It’s nice to see the developers considering users of budget gaming PCs.

Ray Tracing — Necessary or Not?

This is the cherry on top. Instead of a thousand words, just watch a video showing off the lighting quality and see for yourself the benefits of NVIDIA's new technology.

Whether it's worth it or not depends on your budget. More and more games are partnering with NVIDIA, so we’re going to see plenty of titles utilizing ray tracing in the future. It’s amazing — you get to experience cinematic visuals right at home. And thanks to the power of RTX cards, you can easily run multiple Full HD monitors or a single 2K/4K display.

How Much Video Memory Do You Need?

Here are the official *Metro: Exodus* VRAM requirements:

  • UltraHD Ultra (4K) – 11 GB;
  • QuadHD Ultra (2K) – 8 GB;
  • FullHD High – 8 GB;
  • FullHD Low – 2 GB;

Processor

You’ll need a high-performance processor — the game features well-developed physics, and your graphics card needs to be properly utilized. The recommended and minimum system requirements list older CPU models, which are significantly weaker compared to modern options. So when choosing a gaming PC, it's best to start with platforms like Intel Core i5-8400 or i5-9600K.

If you're planning to stream or record gameplay, you’ll need a more powerful chip — starting with the i7-9700K. And if you're aiming for 4K resolution gaming and streaming, the Intel Core i9-9900K is a solid choice. This processor will help you build a gaming rig with future-proof performance, and it handles large video files with ease.

RAM

The developers didn’t surprise us here: 8 GB is the bare minimum for a modern gaming PC. For 4K monitors and systems built to match, that won’t be enough — so mid-range builds typically start at 16 GB of RAM.

Considering current trends, DDR3 is long obsolete. All recent processor generations support DDR4 only — and that’s a good thing. It’s faster, produces less heat, and improves overall system responsiveness.

Is an SSD Necessary?

*Metro: Exodus* features a semi-open world — large areas connected by mission-based transitions. Since it's still a shooter, you’ll encounter loading screens between levels. To minimize load times and keep the experience smooth, a fast storage drive is essential.

An SSD is a must-have for any gaming PC. Even better is a dual-drive setup: SSD + HDD. Use the SSD for your OS, software, and games — you’ll enjoy significantly faster load times and much better responsiveness.

Top-tier systems benefit from M.2 SSDs by SAMSUNG or Kingston — both brands produce professional-grade hardware. M.2 drives offer speeds far beyond standard SATA 3. Read/write speeds can be up to 7x faster — reaching up to 3.5 GB/s.
