What’s New in the Enhanced Version
The developers have added the following:
- 3D audio;
- DLSS and FSR technologies;
- Ray-traced shadows;
- Ray-traced reflections;
- Ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion;
- Direct Storage feature for fast loading via NVMe SSDs.
Next, we’ll take a closer look at the graphical improvements in the game.
Ray-Traced Shadows
Shadows in GTA V traditionally have a very short draw distance. For example, if you step just a few meters away from a chain-link fence, its shadow completely disappears. With ray tracing enabled, this issue is fully resolved. Shadows remain visible even from far away, and their edges become softer, making them look much more realistic.
Ray-Traced Reflections
In GTA V, reflections are created using:
- Cubemaps. Used for both transparent and opaque surfaces.
- Planar reflections. Used for water surfaces.
Both methods have significant drawbacks. For example, cubemaps reflect only buildings, but not people or vehicles. Planar reflections can show moving objects, but at very low quality and resolution.
Ray tracing technology solves the limitations of traditional rasterization methods. Reflections become significantly more realistic and higher in quality. Moreover, they apply to all surface types—transparent and opaque.
Ray-Traced Global Illumination and Ambient Occlusion
In real life, light reflects multiple times before reaching our eyes. Ray tracing mimics this behavior. When global illumination with ray tracing is enabled, objects take on new color tones and appear more natural due to the multiple light bounce calculations.
Ambient occlusion works in a similar way. With ray tracing enabled, areas that don’t receive direct light—such as corners of rooms or spaces beneath cars and furniture—are shaded more accurately.
