There is no more controversial game genre than Role-Playing Games. Over the past 20 years, it has undergone tremendous changes. From isometric projects with turn-based combat systems to big-budget blockbusters with massive and lively open worlds. Old-school fans prefer to divide these games into RPGs and action-RPGs. The first ones belong to the "old-school" category with rich variability, slow-paced gameplay, and complex stat systems. The latter have fewer opportunities for role-playing. Often, their diversity ends with two or three dialogue options, which don't even affect the main storyline. However, action-RPGs are filled with special effects, feature dynamic gameplay, and boast graphics that rival those of modern AAA shooters.
Why do modern developers neglect variability? The answer is obvious – money. Developing modern games costs tens, or even hundreds of millions of dollars. Creating just one quest can cost a few seven-digit sums. When you need to develop a mission with multiple outcomes and paths, production costs increase dramatically. But the price increase is only half of the problem. The issue also lies in the complexity of development. Game designers, programmers, and writers must account for many outcomes. They need to debug and implement them so that the experience feels coherent and unified. And this requires time, attention, perseverance, and a great deal of patience.
Today, we won't focus on whether a game is an RPG or a more modern action-RPG. Therefore, this ranking will include both genres. Our goal is to introduce you to the best role-playing projects ever created by humanity. Here’s our top list of the best RPG games for PC.
10th Place – Elden Ring
Our ranking opens with "Elden Ring" – a project that was awarded Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022. The development was led by Japanese game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki, for whom this award became his second.
The action takes place in a fantasy world with a dark and grim setting. Queen Marika decides to destroy a powerful artifact – the Elden Ring. With its help, the Gods regularly interfered in the affairs of mortals. Marika gives the parts of the destroyed ring to her followers. They vow to guard and protect the fragments. The protagonist’s task is to gather all the parts of the Elden Ring and use it to restore the connection with the Gods.
The gameplay is a third-person slasher set in an open world. The player travels the map and clears one region after another. When the player’s equipment and skills reach the necessary level, they challenge a boss to obtain a fragment of the Elden Ring. In addition to battles, the player will have access to areas for exploration and quests from third-party NPCs. These quests are meant to immerse the player deeper into the Elden Ring universe and reveal more about its story.
9th Place – Kingdom Come: Deliverance
Can you imagine an RPG without elves, magic, and dragons? Neither could the world’s publishers. So the Warhorse studio went looking for money on Kickstarter. After a few years, they managed to raise the necessary amount and launch the development of an RPG set in a realistic setting. Today, we know this project as Kingdom Come: Deliverance.
The events of the game unfold in the year 1403 in the territory of Bohemia (modern-day Czech Republic). Shortly before the main storyline begins, Emperor Charles IV of the Holy Roman Empire dies. One of his sons, Wenceslaus IV, ascends to the throne. However, unlike his father, he prefers festivities and drunkenness to state affairs. His half-brother, King Sigismund of Hungary, takes advantage of this and captures Wenceslaus, sparking a full-scale war.
The protagonist is the son of a blacksmith named Indrzhikh. Depending on the chosen voice acting, he will be called Henry or Indro (why this happens remains unclear to players). One day, his village – Silver Skalitsa – is attacked by soldiers of the Hungarian King Sigismund. The boy’s parents are killed during the ruthless raid, but he manages to survive. He makes his way to the nearby Talmberg Castle and decides to find the raiders and avenge the death of his family.
The gameplay of Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a first-person action RPG. In addition to its realistic setting, the game surprises with its camera positioning. Unlike the usual third-person view, players only have access to the first-person perspective. This increases the immersion of the experience, enhancing the medieval atmosphere.
The core gameplay of Kingdom Come: Deliverance is combat. It features both melee and ranged weapons. Melee weapons are represented by authentic examples from the early 15th century, including swords, axes, and maces. Each weapon type has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, a mace can damage armored opponents, but its speed is insufficient for battling lightly armored enemies. Ranged weapons are limited to bows (crossbows were extremely rare in Bohemia). Arrows are chosen based on the situation – for instance, penetrating ammunition is needed to pierce armor, while piercing arrows deliver maximum damage.
The combat system is complex yet unique. To deliver a strike, you must not only press buttons but also aim the attacks using the mouse. The damage will depend on where you hit and the enemy’s armor. Slashing with a sword against chainmail won’t cause damage, but a mace doesn’t care about how good the armor is.
You can enhance your attacking abilities with poisons. To brew them, you need to read the relevant literature. However, it's 1403, and you still need to learn to read. To do this, you will need to visit a tutor and pay to learn literacy. But what if your financial situation leaves much to be desired? No worries. In 1403, there are various ways to earn money. For instance, you can go hunting and gather fur. You can also loot the bodies of fallen enemies. The removed armor and weapons can be sold for a good price. And as a last resort, you can engage in theft. But for this, you’ll need to find a fence, who will help you get rid of your stolen goods for a small fee.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a great example of how a realistic setting can create an excellent RPG. Its only drawback is the modest development budget. However, the quality story, excellent atmosphere, and authenticity of the events make you forget about all the project's shortcomings.
8th Place – Dragon Age: Origins
Today, this is one of the most variable RPGs in history. Also, the first installment is considered the best by fans of the Dragon Age series. Neither "Inquisition" nor the second installment could replicate the success of the original.
Dragon Age: Origins takes place in the kingdom of Ferelden. On its border, "Darkspawn" – demonic creatures whose goal is to destroy everything in their path – are gathering. To resist the threat, the protagonist joins the Grey Wardens, an organization dedicated to fighting all types of demonic creatures. In the decisive battle, the Grey Wardens suffer defeat, but the protagonist survives. Now, they must restore the order and recruit as many supporters as possible to rid the kingdom of the Darkspawn.
Dragon Age: Origins is a fantasy action RPG played from a third-person perspective. However, instead of turn-based combat, the fights unfold in real-time. The game is paused to allow the player to think of a strategy before giving commands to companions and the main character.
Quests in Dragon Age: Origins can be completed in many different ways. The available options depend on the chosen race and abilities. Decisions made during dialogues will have long-lasting consequences. Players must carefully choose their answers to ensure that the events unfold as they desire by the end of the story.
7th Place – Divinity: Original Sin 2
Similar to Kingdom Come: Deliverance, the development of this game was funded not by a publisher, but by regular users through Kickstarter. And the funds for development were collected just 12 hours after the announcement of Divinity: Original Sin 2.
The story takes place in the fantasy world of Rivellon. The protagonist is endowed with monstrous power, which frightens ordinary people. For this, they are sent to a distant island where others like them are held. Eventually, the protagonist escapes and, along with their companions, reaches the continent. From there, their new life begins, one that they must build from scratch.
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a turn-based RPG with an isometric camera. All combat occurs sequentially – you attack first, then the enemy. You must choose the right strikes and spells to deal the most damage to the opponent.
After completing the starting area, the player will have access to a vast open world. You are free to choose where to go and what to do. However, the deep and well-crafted story will constantly intrigue you. The story of Divinity: Original Sin 2 will immerse any player into its universe.
6th Place – Disco Elysium
Unexpectedly, in 2019, at The Game Awards, the small Estonian studio ZA/UM received the award for "Best Role-Playing Game". Their project, Disco Elysium, became a true hit that gamers around the world heard about. Today, it is rightfully considered one of the best role-playing games in the history of the industry.
The story of Disco Elysium revolves around a private detective. He, a man suffering from a hangover, wakes up in an unknown apartment. After some time, the detective remembers that he is investigating a murder. It seems that he has already solved the case, but due to his hangover, he can't remember anything. The detective must re-investigate and find out who the killer really is.
Disco Elysium is an isometric RPG with dice rolls. This means that actions require dice rolls, and the outcome depends on the result. The game also features a "voices in the head" system. These voices will help guide the investigation and give hints on what to do next. However, the core of the gameplay is the dialogues. In Disco Elysium, players will engage in many conversations with NPCs to reconstruct the events that took place. This story will keep the player intrigued and in constant suspense until the very end.
5th Place – Fallout: New Vegas
This project is an excellent example of how to properly combine the action and RPG genres. A complex stat system does not contradict the player’s agility and reaction time. On the contrary, it complements them, which aligns with the "classic RPG" status.
The plot tells an alternate history. After World War II, humans developed atomic energy and created many technologies based on it. In 2077, a global nuclear war breaks out. The remnants of humanity must survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The game takes place in 2281 in the state of Nevada. The protagonist is a courier hired to deliver a package, but along the way, he is ambushed. The assailants rob the courier and kill him. However, the protagonist survives. Now, he must find the assailants and retrieve the stolen package.
Fallout: New Vegas is a third-person shooter. However, thanks to its deep variability, missions can be completed not only with firearms. The player also has stealth mechanics and many dialogue options. In addition to the main storyline, New Vegas offers dozens of secondary activities. Join factions, play casino games, explore ruins – all of this will immerse you in the world of nuclear post-apocalypse for many hours.
4th Place – Fallout 2
Fallout 2 is a legendary classic role-playing game. Why? Because no other RPG project can boast such a rich, multi-layered system. Quests can be completed not in two or three ways, but in dozens of ways. This allows each playthrough to be individualized and unique.
In the 90s, developing games with a large open world and 3D graphics was impossible. Therefore, Fallout 2 is an isometric RPG, and all the activity, as with turn-based strategy games, boils down to clicking on the necessary icons. But why is it interesting to play? The point is that the player’s brain is constantly engaged. To defeat the opponent, you need to:
- develop a strategy;
- calculate the likelihood of success;
- calculate the chance of hitting;
- prepare the necessary items and do many other actions that immerse you in the gameplay.
And thanks to the immense variability, Fallout 2 is fun to play again and again.
Just like in Fallout: New Vegas, the action unfolds in a post-apocalyptic America. The protagonist is a resident of Arroyo – a small village in the western United States. One day, the elder declares him the chosen one and sends him on a long journey for a special device. This device is supposed to help reclaim post-war soil and make it suitable for agriculture. The protagonist sets out on his journey, but along the way, he encounters the militarized group "Enclave." They intend to destroy all mutated life forms using a virus. Now, the protagonist must not only find the "miracle device," but also stop the Enclave from executing their plan.
3rd Place – Mass Effect 2
The second part of "Mass Effect" became the best project in BioWare's history. In 2021, they released a legendary edition of the entire trilogy, which is a great reason to dive into one of the best action-RPG series.
The game takes place immediately after the events of the first part. Captain Shepard and his team are involved in destroying the remnants of the Geths. During another raid, an unknown enemy attacks his ship. After evacuating the crew, Shepard doesn't make it to the escape pod and dies. However, his life does not end there. The remains are collected by the extremist organization "Cerberus" and, over the course of two years, they use molecules to rebuild the captain. When Shepard regains consciousness, he learns that the threat of the Reapers has not disappeared. The leader of Cerberus demands that Shepard gather a team once again to prevent the Reapers from entering the Milky Way galaxy.
The core gameplay remains unchanged from the first part. Mass Effect 2 is still a third-person RPG shooter with companions. However, the complex stat system is now gone. For example, hitting the target is as simple as aiming at the enemy. There’s no need to spend points on upgrading specific types of weapons.
The focus in Mass Effect 2 is on the characters. Shepard will need to track down candidates and convince them to join the dangerous mission. To do so, he must help each of them solve personal problems.
2nd Place – The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
This project is known not only to gamers worldwide but also to people who have never played computer games. And that’s because Bethesda created a rich, deeply developed, and alive open world. The best way to describe it is: "Once you enter Skyrim, you won’t want to return to reality." If you haven’t played this legendary masterpiece, it’s never too late to catch up and explore one of the best RPGs in the history of game development.
The Elder Scrolls 5 takes place in a fantasy world with a medieval setting. The story unfolds in Skyrim, a northern province of the Tamriel Empire. As in previous installments, the protagonist is a prisoner. He is captured along with rebels while attempting to cross the state border illegally. Without questioning who is who, the imperial soldiers send the protagonist to the execution block along with the insurgents. But just before the execution, a dragon attacks the city and the local guard. In the ensuing chaos, the protagonist manages to escape. He makes his way to the nearby village of Riverwood, where he receives help from the locals. They ask him to quickly inform the local Jarl that a dragon is on the loose. From here, the protagonist’s journey begins, taking him across Skyrim and a small part of the neighboring province of Morrowind.
The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim has an extremely varied combat system. Do you want to run around with a two-handed axe? Sure, there are dozens of options. Don’t like axes and prefer ranged combat? No problem, Skyrim even has crossbows. Or maybe you prefer to use magic and summon monsters from other worlds? That works too. In the Elder Scrolls universe, there are plenty of summoning spells. And what if you want to shoot at an enemy with a bow, summon a monster, and finish off the opponent with an axe? No problem. Mix and match your attacks as you see fit.
In addition to combat, there are many other activities in the world of Skyrim:
- Start a family;
- Build a house for it;
- Study alchemy;
- Practice necromancy;
- Search for useful minerals;
- Engage in theft;
- Explore ancient ruins.
No one and nothing limits you. You can literally become anyone and do whatever you want.
In addition to the large number of activities, The Elder Scrolls 5 also attracts players with its rich and immersive world. For example, all NPCs have their own daily routine. At one time, they sleep, at another they work, and at a third, they drink at the tavern. The situation with animals is similar. They hunt each other, fight amongst themselves, and flee when they realize they could become prey. All of this further immerses the player and makes them believe in the reality of what’s happening. Gamers say, "In Skyrim, people don’t play, they live."
Special mention goes to the mods that can be installed in two clicks. Just move the necessary files into the game's Data folder and enable the plugins in the launcher. This is enough to install 99% of all existing mods. Don’t neglect them, as mods can significantly improve your experience and make the immersion in the world of the Elder Scrolls even more captivating and exciting.
First Place – The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
If, for some reason, you haven't played this game, after reading this article, immediately start installing this masterpiece. Take a leave from work, have a break from school, send your kids to their grandparents... Do whatever you can to find time for this game development creation. If any game deserves to make you neglect real life for the sake of the virtual world, it's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The story takes place in the world of Neverland – a fantasy world with a medieval setting. It is inhabited by both humans and other intelligent races. Elves, gnomes, dwarves, halflings – all of them try to coexist on the same continent. One day, a global magical catastrophe occurs in the universe. Neverland briefly intersects with other worlds, leading to the invasion of creatures from other realities. Dangerous monsters enter Neverland, threatening the very existence of intelligent races.
In an effort to fight the monsters, humans create Witchers – professional mercenaries specialized in monster hunting. To effectively perform their job, they undergo years of training in sword fighting, alchemy, and the use of magical signs. After completing their training, newcomers undergo the "Trial of the Herbs". The trainees lie on an operating table, and for several days, alchemical elixirs are injected into their blood. After this procedure, the subjects' physical abilities necessary for fighting monsters are enhanced. However, only three or four out of ten newcomers survive the experiment.
The player will take on the role of Geralt of Rivia – the legendary Witcher, also known as the "White Wolf". His story begins six months after the events of The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. Geralt fully regains his memory and sets off to search for his old love, Yennefer of Vengerberg. When Geralt finds her, it turns out that the Wild Hunt is chasing Ciri – a girl whom Geralt raised as his own daughter. Now, he must find Ciri and save her from the clutches of the "Red Riders".
Gameplay-wise, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a third-person action RPG in an open world. The combat system includes not only sword fighting but also magic, alchemy, crossbow shooting, and bomb throwing. Each type of monster has its own behavior pattern. For example, Drowners attempt to surround the player and attack from behind, while Fiends charge head-on, making ramming attacks. For the monsters, the Witcher has a special silver sword. For each monster, players will need to adjust not only the fighting style but also use consumables like bombs and oils. More details can be found in the Bestiary, which describes each creature in detail.
Besides monsters, Geralt will also have to fight other terrifying creatures – humans. For this, he carries an additional sword made of steel. Throughout the storyline, the main character will also repeatedly take on the role of a detective. Thanks to the Trial of the Herbs, Geralt has enhanced senses: hearing, smell, and sight. Together, they form the "Witcher senses". By pressing the right mouse button, important elements around the character are highlighted. By analyzing them, the Witcher reconstructs the events and uncovers the truth behind certain occurrences.
In addition to battles and detective investigations, the game features many dialogues. But since all the characters are well-developed, listening to the conversations and giving answers is engaging. Each conversation partner has their own charisma, intonation, and motivation. The dialogues are not filled with meaningless chatter but reveal the game's lore or the character's backstory. Your responses will have long-lasting consequences. This will directly affect the world around the Witcher and also the attitude of certain NPCs towards him.
To get the most enjoyment out of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, it is highly recommended to read Andrzej Sapkowski's book saga and play the first and second parts of the trilogy. Especially since the games include a save transfer feature. This means that the decisions you made in the previous game will carry over to the next. This way, you will create your own unique story, and the construction of such a story is one of the most important aspects of the RPG genre.
