The Day Before is a survival simulator in an open world, developed by Endnight Games. The game is a sequel to The Forest, a cult survival game set on a peninsula with savage natives. In the sequel, players will once again find themselves on the territory of a cruel archipelago, but now with improved graphics, updated mechanics, and a new storyline.
Game Plot
The game's plot takes place in the United States. The country, like the rest of the world, is plagued by an epidemic of an unknown disease. The virus spreads between people through bites and turns humanity into hordes of bloodthirsty monsters. Infected individuals' only desire is to continually satisfy their hunger. To do this, they eat any living beings that cross their path.
The user takes on the role of a survivor whose main goal is to stay alive as long as possible. To achieve this, the player will embark on a search for safe colonies. Along the way, they will have to find shelter, gather resources, and fight zombies and other players.

Gameplay
The Day Before is a third-person MMO shooter in an open world. Gamers will encounter other users with whom they can become allies or enemies. The basis of gameplay is not only shooting but also resource gathering. Food, clothing, weapons, and medicine - everything you need to survive in a post-apocalyptic world, you will have to obtain from abandoned cities and farms. Some players, instead of looking for resources, will try to take them from others. Therefore, gamers need to be on guard during interactions with each other.
Transportation
Transportation in the open world can be done not only on foot but also by using vehicles. However, before starting a car, it will need to be repaired. This will require two types of resources (scrap metal and tape) and one repair kit. In addition to the condition of the vehicle, the player will have to monitor the fuel level. If the gas in the tank runs out, the user will have to get out of the car, take a canister in hand, and refuel the vehicle.
Collisions and reckless driving will cause breakdowns. It will require many resources to fix them. The condition of the vehicle will also be influenced by the quality of the road surface. For example, asphalt surfaces will not damage the vehicle, but off-road conditions will cause serious malfunctions.
Colonies of survivors
Colonies of survivors will be safe places filled with NPCs and other players. Shooting, as well as other aggressive actions, will be prohibited on the colony's territory. Users will be able to communicate with each other and trade. It will be possible to exchange any resources and items, including firearms.
Body condition
The Day Before is not only a shooter, but also a survival game. Players will have to monitor three attributes of their character:
- heat;
- thirst;
- hunger.
Harsh weather conditions and inappropriate clothing can cause hypothermia, which will reduce the character's health until they die. Hypothermia can be avoided not only with warm clothing, but also with a fire, shelter, or hot food, which will help normalize body temperature.
The more a player moves, the stronger their thirst will become. The level of hydration can be replenished with drinks. Water is best for quenching thirst, but it must be collected from bodies of water and boiled. Sweet drinks in aluminum cans are not as effective, but they can be consumed immediately.
The player's hunger will also depend on their activity level. Running and fighting with enemies increases calorie expenditure. To replenish them, food must be sought out. Food, like drink, will vary. Caloric foods better satisfy the body, while low-calorie options do not.
System Requirements
In February 2022, FNTASTIC developers officially published system requirements for The Day Before. But in May, they announced that the game was being transferred to a new version of the Unreal Engine. Previously, the project was created on the fourth version of Epic Games software. Therefore, the published system requirements are incorrect. But we will still list them.
Minimum system requirements:
Operating system | Windows 7, 8.1, 10 (64-bit) |
---|---|
CPU | Intel Core i5-4430 / AMD FX-6300 |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 |
RAM | 10 GB |
Disk Space | 75 GB |
Recommended system requirements:
Operating system | Windows 7, 8.1, 10 (64-bit) |
---|---|
CPU | Intel Core i5-6600K |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 |
RAM | 16 GB |
Disk Space | 75 GB |
Unreal Engine 5 differs from the previous version in two technologies: Lumen and Nanite. The former is responsible for global lighting, while the latter is responsible for better display of levels of detail (LOD). Both technologies significantly load the components, so we expect the following recommended system requirements:
Operating system | Windows 11 |
---|---|
CPU | Intel Core i5-12400(F) |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 |
RAM | 16 GB |
Disk Space | 75 GB SSD |
In The Day Before, players will often encounter other players, so regular shootouts are inevitable. A high frame rate will provide a significant advantage over the opponent. The image will become smoother, making aiming easier and more accurate. Also, the game will implement ray tracing technology (DXR), which calculates global lighting, shadows, and reflections according to the laws of physics. This will make the graphics natural and realistic. However, a high-performance system will be required to achieve these benefits:
Operating system | Windows 11 |
---|---|
CPU | Intel Core i7-13700K(F) |
GPU | NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 |
RAM | 32 GB |
Disk Space | 75 GB SSD M.2 |
Release date
The official release date is March 1, 2023. The release was originally planned for June 21, 2022, but the FNTASTIC studio decided to transfer the game to the new version of the Unreal Engine. According to the developers' statement, this led to the postponement of the novelty.
