Return of a Legend: Restoration of an exclusive project in COUGAR Conquer

About the project

The client came in with a computer that had previously been assembled by HYPERPC (Cougar Conquer semi-open chassis). The problem is no display output to the monitor.

Specifications

Even by modern standards, there is very decent hardware hidden inside, which is ready to show excellent results:

  • Graphics card:
ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (Strix)
  • CPU:
    Intel Core i9-9900KS
  • Motherboard:
    ASUS ROG MAXIMUS XI HERO
  • Cooling:
    Noctua NH-D15 Black
  • RAM:
    32GB (2 x 16GB) HyperX Predator RGB DDR4-3200
  • Drives:
1TB Samsung 970 EVO Plus (SSD)
    4TB Seagate BarraCuda (HDD)
  • Power supply:
    Corsair RM850x 850W
  • Case:
    COUGAR Conquer

Diagnostics

Upon inspection, a significant amount of dust was found on the components - typical for open stands without regular maintenance.

The main complaint is the lack of images. Diagnostics showed: the system starts with only one stick of RAM. When installing the second bracket and switching to dual-channel mode, the motherboard generated an initialization error.

Reason and solution

When tested, the memory modules turned out to be in good condition. The problem was looked for elsewhere.

The reason turned out to be oxidation of the contact pads on the Intel Core i9-9900KS processor, due to which the second memory channel did not work.

“If the memory is physically good and the system does not start in dual-channel mode, the reason is often the memory controller on the processor. We removed the Noctua cooler and removed the processor for inspection."

HYPERPC Service Center Engineer

Completed work

  • Complete cleaning of the housing and components from dust.
  • Treating oxidized processor contacts with an alcohol solution.
  • Replacing thermal paste under the Noctua cooler during reassembly.

Result

After repair, the system starts in dual-channel mode without errors, stress tests are passed. The repair was limited to diagnostics and restoration of the processor contacts - replacement of components was not required.
