Second wind for the flagship: Deep maintenance of ASUS ROG STRIX RTX 3090
About the Project
Problem
Inspection showed:
- The cooling system is clogged with a dense layer of dust;
- Fans moved air through blocked radiators with limited efficiency;
- the radiator block was so clogged with a layer of dust that it led to overheating, throttling and the risk of chip damage under peak loads.
It was impossible to limit ourselves to ordinary air blowing - complete disassembly was required.
Completed work
HYPERPC engineers do not accept half measures. To return the graphics card to its original aesthetics and temperature benchmarks, we carried out a complete maintenance. The result of the technician’s precision work is that the card has been disassembled down to the screw.
- Dismantling: We disconnected the backplate, casing with Axial-tech fans, radiator unit and printed circuit board.
- Cleaning: The radiator and fan blades were washed and dried - contamination on the blades could cause an imbalance when rotating at high speeds. The circuit board was cleaned with antistatic tools.
- Replacing the thermal interface: We removed the old thermal paste and thermal pads, applied new thermal paste to the graphics chip, installed new thermal pads on the GDDR6X memory chips and the VRM area.
“When disassembling graphics cards of the RTX 3090 level, it is important not to damage the memory chips when removing the heatsink. Complete disassembly is necessary so that the thermal interface lies flat and the radiator channels are clean.”
Result
After assembly and stress tests, the graphics card returned to factory temperature values, boost frequencies remain at the original level, and fans operate without any extraneous noise.
