Phison Unveils PCIe 6.0 SSD Prototypes Hitting 24 GB/s Speeds

26 January 2026.

Phison has offered a glimpse into the future of storage technology by showcasing its latest PCIe 6.0 SSD prototypes. The new controllers demonstrate massive performance gains, achieving sequential read speeds of up to 24 GB/s. This represents a significant leap forward, nearly doubling the bandwidth limits of current high-end PCIe 5.0 drives.

However, this extreme performance comes with increased thermal challenges. According to Phison, the new prototypes generate significant heat, making passive cooling solutions obsolete for these speeds. To maintain stable performance without throttling, these next-generation drives will require active cooling solutions, such as dedicated fans or advanced thermal management systems.

While primarily targeted at enterprise and data center applications initially, this technology sets the roadmap for future high-performance consumer workstations and gaming rigs.

Conclusion from HYPERPC:

"At HYPERPC, we see PCIe 6.0 as the next frontier for ultimate performance. While 24 GB/s is a game-changer for data-heavy workflows, the requirement for active cooling aligns perfectly with our philosophy. We build systems that not only perform but stay cool under pressure. We are ready to integrate these next-gen storage solutions into our premium builds as soon as they hit the market."
